Red light technology for scalp and hair root health

Red Light Therapy is a scalp care service using red light technology, based on the concept of Photobiomodulation (PBM) — using light at suitable wavelengths to stimulate the biological response of cells, without needles or surgery.

This technology has attracted interest in skin and hair health research, as studies have looked at the relationship between light energy and cellular processes, including hair follicle function and the hair growth cycle. However, the effectiveness of light-based care depends on many factors, such as wavelength, light intensity, exposure time, treatment frequency and the cause of each person’s hair problem.

Red Light Therapy is another option for scalp and hair root care, using light technology as part of an ongoing hair care routine. It can be considered together with other hair care approaches as appropriate and as assessed by a doctor.

How Red Light Therapy Works

Studies suggest that Photobiomodulation is involved in hair follicle function and the hair growth cycle, especially in people with certain types of hair thinning. However, the mechanism of action is still being studied, and results are not the same for everyone.

Red Light Therapy Service Highlights

  • Uses red light technology to care for the scalp
  • No needles, no surgery, and generally no downtime
  • Suitable for those who want regular hair root and scalp care
  • Can be part of other hair care plans as appropriate

Who Is Red Light Therapy For?

At MP Clinic, light therapy is used as a supplementary treatment to enhance the effectiveness of the main treatment, suitable for clients in the following groups

1. Hereditary hair thinning (Androgenetic Alopecia)

The most common group. The main treatment is DHT-blocking medication, and light therapy helps the treatment show results faster and helps strengthen the hair roots.

2. Hair transplant patients

Light therapy is used as part of post-transplant care to help reduce swelling, stimulate blood flow to the grafts and reduce the risk of infection. Patients who have a hair transplant at MP Clinic receive continuous light therapy for 9 consecutive days after the transplant.

3. Patchy hair loss (Alopecia Areata)

Used as a supplement to the main treatment, which is steroid injections and topical Minoxidil. Light therapy helps stimulate the hair roots to regrow faster.

4. People who cannot take oral hair growth medication

Such as cancer patients or people with certain underlying conditions. Light therapy can be used as an option, possibly together with topical medication or PRP injections. However, results may not be as clear as treatment that includes oral medication.

Who Is Red Light Therapy Not Suitable For?

1. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before the service

2. People with open wounds or skin diseases on the scalp

3. People with scalp diseases or conditions that are still being treated

4. People with photosensitivity or taking medication that causes sensitivity to light should inform the doctor before the service

Key Factors for Effective Light Therapy

1. Combined treatment with medication

For people with hereditary hair thinning, DHT-blocking medication remains the main treatment. Light therapy cannot directly correct genetic factors.

2. Appropriate treatment frequency

MP Clinic recommends light therapy twice a week, about 15 minutes per session, an appropriate frequency for continuous hair root stimulation.

3. Standard-certified equipment

Choosing light therapy devices certified by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (อย.) is important for treatment safety and effectiveness.

If you want to use light technology specifically to treat hair loss or thinning, you should consult a doctor to assess the cause and choose a suitable treatment.

Service duration: about 15 minutes per session
Recommended frequency: every 3 days, or as assessed and according to the device specifications

Service Process

1. Initial scalp assessment and relevant medical history

2. Preparation before the service according to the clinic’s procedure

3. Wear eye protection according to the clinic’s requirements

4. 15 minutes of light therapy as scheduled

5. Return to normal activities right after

FAQ

Q1. What does Red Light Therapy help with?

It helps stimulate cell activity around the hair roots and supports the care of hair loss or thinning in some cases.

Q2. Is this service suitable for people with more hair loss than usual?

It is suitable in some cases, but the cause of hair loss should also be investigated, such as hormonal disorders, nutritional deficiencies or stress.

Q3. Can people with hair loss after weight loss have this treatment?

Yes, but the cause should also be investigated, such as insufficient protein or nutrients, because light therapy alone may not solve the root of the problem.

Q4. How long does each session take?

Each light therapy session takes about 15 minutes, according to MP Clinic’s program.

Q5. How often should I have it?

Twice a week is recommended, adjusted according to the doctor’s assessment.

Q6. How many months do I need to continue before seeing results?

It takes about 3–6 months to assess results, depending on hair condition and the cause of the problem.

Q7. Is there any downtime after the treatment?

Generally there is no downtime; you can return to normal activities right after.

Q8. Does red light therapy hurt?

Generally it does not hurt, but you may feel slightly warm, depending on the device and type of treatment.

Q9. Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience irritation or discomfort on the scalp. If you notice anything unusual, please inform our staff.

Q10. Will I see results with Red Light Therapy alone, without medication?

No, you won’t see results. Other treatments are needed alongside it.

Q11. What should I do if my hair is still falling out after treatment?

Come back to see the doctor to assess the cause and adjust the treatment plan. Do not increase the frequency of light therapy on your own.
